| AAP Statement on ECGs in ADHD/Stimulants The American Academy of Pediatrics has responded to the American Heart Association's recent recommendation that children taking stimulant medications for ADHD receive an ECG. The Academy does not recommend screening ECGs unless the patient's history, family history or the physical examination raises concerns. | Need funding to work on a community project? The AAP’s CATCH (Community Access to Child Health) program provides up to $12,000 start-up grants for planning and implementation of community-based programs to local pediatricians and residents. The program’s focus is on linking children to medical homes and providing access to any other needed health care services. Information on the current grant cycle is available on the AAP website at http://www.aap.org/catch/planninggrants.htm for Planning Grants and at http://www.aap.org/catch/residentgrants.htm for Resident Grants. Applications are due July 31, 2008. Texas pediatricians have done well in recent grant cycles so anyone interested is strongly encouraged to apply. Texas has 2 co-facilitators who are happy to answer questions and provide assistance in the application process: Contact Dr. Louis Appel (louisa@austinpcc.org) or Dr. Carl Tapia (ct692423@bcm.tmc.edu). | Medical Home Funding Opportunity The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program has issued a Notice of Open Enrollment requesting applications from Texas pediatric or family physician practices to implement practice-level supports to help improve the provision of a Medical Home for children and youth with special health care needs and their families. Up to $10,000 per Medical Home practice for a limited number of practices will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to support pediatric and/or family physician Medical Home services and quality improvement efforts. To be enrolled as a Contractor for Medical Home Supports, the applicant must meet the eligibility requirements described in the Notice and complete, sign, and submit the application attached to the Notice. The enrollment period begins March 1, 2008 and ends March 1, 2009. | The Texas Pediatric Society would like to congratulate the Wegmans supermarket chain for their decision to stop selling cigarettes and all other tobacco products in each of their 71 stores in five northeastern states. TPS President, Ernie Buck, MD, and Co-Chair of the TPS Committee on Adolescence, Janet Williams, MD, have issued the following letter to newspapers around the state of Texas applauding this public health initiative and urging others to follow Wegmans’ lead. | Friends of Texas Public Schools is an organization geared at informing the public about the successes of public schools. The FTPS mission statement says that by “lifting up our public schools as places of triumph and achievement, we hope to restore Texans’ faith in our public school system.” The group has developed a poster aimed at promoting public schools. | The Texas Department of State Health Services has contracted with The Litaker Group to create a five-year strategic vision for a health system approach to public health preparedness.
